Benni McCarthy Denies Sundowns Coaching Talks
Former Bafana Bafana star, Benni McCarthy, has quashed rumours that he was in discussions to become the head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns.
From 2022 to 2024, McCarthy worked under then-manager, Erik ten Hag, as a first-team coach for English outfit, Manchester United.
Following his departure from the club, McCarthy returned to South Africa two months ago as a studio analyst for local broadcaster SuperSport.
The 47-year-old’s return fuelled rumours that he was in talks with Sundowns about coaching them, especially after he was recently seen talking with the club’s sporting director, Flemming Berg, in London, England.
However, at a Carling Black Label media event in Johannesburg, Gauteng on Tuesday, 3 December, McCarthy explained:
“We bumped into each other at the airport, we recognised each other and we just spoke … It never came up that there was an insinuation from [Berg’s] side or from my side that there could be a collaboration of working for the club that he is working for. It was just an honest, normal chat, and I think the club made the decision with the coaches that they have.
“So, we were just talking in general about South African football, and that was it.”
